[Movies] Peter Jackson Confirms Which LOTR Characters Will Be In The Hobbit
Posted by Larry Csonka on 12.09.2009

- Peter Jackson recently spoke with MTV News, and put an end to rumors by stating that only three LOTR alumni will be involved in The Hobbit. Here is what Jackson had to say…

"Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise. There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett.

In book terms, the world of 'The Hobbit' takes place 60 years before 'The Lord of the Rings,' as it was written by Tolkien. So, not a lot of the characters actually feature, because they weren't around yet."

So that means the rumors of Viggo Mortensen, Dominic Monaghan and John Rhys-Davies returning are just that, rumors. The Hobbit is set to begin filming in mid-2010.

Shouldn't Saruman be a possibility as well he did take part in the white council which I am sure they are going to include in order to stretch the story into two films

Make a place for Gollum

It took the entire first season of Lost for me to stop calling him a Hobbit. Now on Flash Forward I call him Charlie. No way he's going back to hobbit because I'd still call him Charlie other than his hobbit name.

Good point. I remember it was confirmed The White Council and their exploits against the Necromancer would play a major role in the films. I I suppose these are only the confirmed alumni for now.

Technically Legolas would have been around too.

Well there has to be a Gollum! Unless he's in the second Hobbit film??

I thought I read that they approached Christopher Lee about reprising his role of Saruman, but he had to turn them down because he's too old to handle the strain of flying over to New Zealand.

They'll more than likely have a new, possibly younger Saruman, a younger Aragorn (he'd be in his 20s, not 80s), and younger Gimli.

They said "LotR Alumn" which means that the original actors would return, it says nothing about whether or not the characters would be back.

You people aren't reading between the lines...

He said that these people won't be in the hobbit. No one knows the title of the second flick and thats where their is room to add the other characters.

those LOTR characters weren't involved in The Hobbit's storyline, younger versions aren't necessary

I think he may have just forgotten to mention Gollum

Isn't Aragorn like a hundred years old? Why can't he be in it? He was great in the trilogy.
